Lately a lot of friends, students and personal training clients have been asking me about whether or not to take Fatburners, and if so, which ones. Here's my opinion: I do not recommend any stimulants or fatburners, unless there is some specific event like, "I'm getting married inree days and I don't fit in my dress," or, "I am a bodybuilder and my competition is in 4 days". Then go ahead, knock yourself out.
The result that you will get from these products is minimal, there will be side effects, and it will not really help your long-term weight management goals at all.
Really the best thing I can stress is to mix cardio with weight training to boost your metabolism, and make necessary adjustments in your diet so that you are getting proper nutrition, as well as achieving a caloric deficit of calories in vs. calories out.
Having said that, if you must take some kind of fatburner, here are my recommendations, along with their respective side effects. Both do not contain central nervous system stimulants.
Pyruvate
One of the fatburners a few of my clients have had success with is Pyruvate. This ingredient is found in several products on the market and is in the final stages of FDA approval for use in foods (soon there will be granola bars and energy bars with Pyruvate). Pyruvate is a naturally occurring enzyme involved in the Krebs cycle.
One of the reasons I do not recommend this is that a.) it is expensive, b.) only works while you are taking it, c.) subjects must take a minimum of 6 500mg capsules per day d.) studies have shown side effect of diarrhea at the recommended dosage.
Chitosan
Many fatburners also contain Chitosan, which is not digested by the body and bonds with a small amount of recently-stored fat before it exits the body.
The reason I do not recommend Chitosan is that along with the recently stored fat, it will prevent the body's absorption of any fat-soluble nutrients or medications, such as vitamins A, D, E and K, and birth control products such as estrogen.
Conclusion: I tell clients that really want to use fatburners to try them for two weeks, then go off of them completely and try instead to add some cardio, even if it is walking for 20 min. per day, and compare the results. I much prefer making diet and lifestyle changes over taking products that act as a 'quick fix' to a long term problem.
